Latin America
General Situation
A long-lasting armed conflict has been ongoing between the government and several armed non-State actors (NSAs) in Colombia. Violations of international norms during the fighting have included the laying of anti-personnel (AP) mines and other victim-activated explosive devices, sexual violence against women and girls, and the recruitment of children by NSAs. Mexico and Peru have also been experiencing low intensity conflicts involving NSAs in recent years.
Since 2003, Geneva Call has been working in Colombia to promote adherence to the AP mine ban by NSAs and to facilitate the implementation of emergency humanitarian mine action in favour of communities affected by AP mines.
In addition, Geneva Call has been undertaking preliminary field assessments and consultations in the country with a view to expanding its advocacy work to the protection of women and children in armed conflict. |
